Our Story

In Spanish Héroe translates to hero. From harvest past to present our production workers are the heroes of the estate vineyard and winery, toiling long days in all kinds of weather. With this label we honor all our past and present workers as well as those winery production teams around the world. These wines reflect beautiful hand manicured fruit, with outstanding wine making.
Wine labels have meanings on each bottle around the world that show the passion and hard work of their story. Each label can signify their own personal story through art, the view of their vineyard, or fun images of people and their animals they love. Héroe wines have a beautiful bottle with a unique heartfelt story.

On the bottle you see an artful picture of the vineyard worker, Lugardo “Uga”. Uga is a long time vineyard worker for Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden in Paso Robles, CA. “Uga did any and every job with a smile”, says Paul Frankel, the winemaker.

Paul grew up on the winery and has known the vineyard workers since a young child. Once he began his winemaking making career he would bottle a special wine to give to the workers around the holidays. He wanted them to be able to share the fruits of their labor with friends and family. One year, as a tease, Paul had their graphic designer put a picture of Uga on the bottle. The team had a good laugh and loved Uga on the bottle and it finally made its way to the tasting room. Paul and the tasting room staff heard positive comments from the customers on how they loved the bottle with Uga’s picture on it. It was a gateway to the beginning of the story about the heroes of the winey. The Héroe brand was born.

Sculpterra was founded to support local art and medical missions. With Heroe, we wanted to the giving back to reflect the brand’s support of the workers.

The face of Uga represents how this wine is special and it’s like no other story. Proceeds from Héroe are donated to the Gold Coast Chapter of The Flying Samaritans, a volunteer organization which operates free medical clinics in Baja California, Mexico. The parent group Flying Samaritan International has 10 chapters operating clinics in 10 -12 remote areas of Baja California. Comprised of doctors, nurses, and caring individuals they offer free medical services to remote villages and people who could otherwise not afford care. They are a non-sectarian organization and their bylaws clearly establish that our purpose is to offer medical assistance and education to the people in rural areas of Mexico.

You can easily access their wines at your local wineries or shops. The brand emcompasses integrity of honest work, passion for the land and caring of the vines on the property.

Sculpterra Winery honors not only the vineyard workers of the family winery but pays respect to unsung heroes of the wine industry throughout the region and beyond- the workers. The Héroe label consists of a Viogneir, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Primitivo. The Héroe wines are designed to be fruit driven and easy drinking, a great wine for any occasion.
